Clamshell Beach Press was started by Professor Arthur V. Hill of the University of Minnesota primarily as a means to find a way to get his Encyclopedia of Operations Management into student hands at a price that students can afford. Most college texts sold today cost students over $100 per book and Professor Hill felt that it was just too expensive for most students (and professors) to afford. Part of the value proposition is to disintermediate college bookstores that often get 25% of the price of the book. Clearly, most publishers and college bookstores add a lot of value to society, but for this type of innovative time-sensitive product, it was clear that a cheaper and faster way to market was needed.

It was out of this need that www.ClamshellBeachPress.com was born.
About the Author

ARTHUR V. HILL (Art) is the John and Nancy Lindahl Professor in the Supply Chain and Operations Department in the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. Until recently, he was the Associate Dean for MBA programs in the Carlson School. He is the Founder and Academic Director of the Carlson Consulting Enterprise.

He has been awarded numerous teaching awards at the Carlson School and was recognized as an outstanding instructor in several national publications including Business Week.

He has been a visiting professor at Indiana University, the Moscow Institute of Management, IMD International in Lausanne Switzerland, Wits University in Johannesburg South Africa, the National University of Singapore, and Eastern International University (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam).

He has provided operations management consulting and/or training for over 100 organizations, including 3M, Andersen Windows & Doors, Best Buy, Bloomington Public Schools, Boston Scientific, Carlson, Cargill, Ceridian, Cummins, Delta Airlines, Dish Network, Dow Chemical, Ecolab, General Mills, Goodrich, Goodwill/Easter Seals, Home Depot, Honeywell, Land O'Lakes, Mayo Clinic, Medtronic, Methodist Hospital, Nestlé, Polaris Industries, Sam Goody, St. Jude Medical, Target, Thomson Reuters, Toro, United Defense, US Bank, and Winnebago. He launched successful process improvement programs at Nestlé HealthCare Nutrition, Transoma Medical, Kemps, and Brooks & Company.

He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point for two years and then earned a BA in Mathematics from Indiana University, an MS in Industrial Administration from the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University, and a PhD in Management, also from Purdue University.

His current research, teaching, and consulting focus on process improvement programs, sales and operations planning, service quality, supply chain management, and knowledge worker productivity.
